Latest Event in the CCS “Cello Explorations” Series:
Music and Memories of Janos Starker
Presented by Mark Kosower, Principal Cellist of The Cleveland Orchestra
The Music Settlement
11125 Magnolia Drive, Cleveland, Ohio 44106
Mr. Kosower has created a fascinating and inspiring presentation of photos and videos chronicling his experiences from childhood to seasoned professional. The program will begin with a performance of the Sonata for Solo Cello, Op 8 by Zoltan Kodaly, followed by the 40-minute audio visual presentation.
The Kodaly Sonata is one of a handful of iconic pieces for the solo cello repertoire. It is infamously challenging to perform, demands virtuosic skill, and is considered one of the most significant works in the genre since Bach’s cello suites. Mr. Kosower studied this piece intensively with Mr. Starker, whom the composer declared to be the definitive interpreter of this great work. Thus today’s performance represents a "direct line of descent” from Kodaly himself. It will be a special treat to hear this in the intimate setting of The Music Settlement’s Glick Recital Hall, which seats no more than 100 patrons and offers wonderful acoustics. This is an opportunity which may not repeat in Cleveland for years to come.
Mr. Kosower’s presentation covering his evolution as a cellist and worldwide performance career, with special emphasis on his mentoring by the legendary Hungarian-American cellist Janos Starker, is an added bonus for the audience, and is full of fascinating insights and anecdotes of great interest to any cellist or fan of the cello.
